How to apply the golden rule

You can make a difference

I remember a story about a mom making pancakes for her two sons. Tommy was four and Billy was two. She was making Mickey Mouse pancakes where you pour one circle and then you pour two smaller circles on top of it to make those ears for Mickey Mouse pancakes. As she flipped the pancakes, one of the pancakes got messed up and one of them stayed intact.

The older brother, Tommy, said, “Ohhh, I want the good pancake.” Mother looked at Tommy and said, “Tommy, Jesus would give his little brother the better pancake.” So Tommy said, “Ah, its okay. Today Billy can be Jesus. Let him be Jesus.”

I was thinking how tempting it is for us in our lives to do that. To not be the one who goes first. To not want to be the one who keeps giving. To know the Golden Rule but waiver on our application of it based on what’s going on in our lives.

So on this day, how about if we just made a decision that we’re going to be the one who goes first all day long. We might be the person who buys coffee for the person behind us in line at the Starbuck’s. We might be the person who pays the toll for the person behind us in line. We might be the person who reaches out again to a friend who hasn’t been able or willing to reach out. What if we just make a decision this day to presence on this planet the Golden Rule? We will be the place where that gold is not only found, but delivered.

Many Blessings,
Mary
