The Most Common Success Myths
You’ve probably heard a version of each of these common myths about success. You may even unwittingly believe a few of them yourself.
What I’m going to recommend is that once you hear about these success myths, you ignore them. You take away the power they have over your dreams and your mind, and start living the life you’d truly love.
It’s possible to have a dream and turn it into your real life.
I know this to be true because I’ve invested the last 40+ years of my life to teaching people how to do just that.
One of the simplest, yet most profound questions, that most people never stop to filly answer for themselves, that I always ask my clients is,
“If you were living a successful life you loved, what would that look like?”
Most of us have a vision of what we’d love our lives to look like, but we fail to take the steps to transform that vision into reality… because we usually allow one of these success myths to hold us back.
A common thread I’ve noticed throughout my work is that “success” means different things to different people.
To some, it can mean greater financial abundance or a more rewarding business or career, while to others it can mean a loving relationship, or more health, energy and vitality.
Whatever success means to you personally, it may surprise you to know that the only thing standing between you and the results you would truly love is your mindset.
And this is good news! Because it means that you have the power to shift your mindset and create the success you desire.
Success doesn’t just magically occur for select, charmed individuals – everyone has the ability to succeed if they adopt the right mindset and let go of limiting beliefs about success that create blocks between themselves and the results they want.
Here are Five of The Most Common Success Myths
If you want to transform your results and create a life you truly love living, it’s important to shine the light of awareness on the areas of your life you want to change, and that includes putting a name to the hidden beliefs you may be holding onto about success. This process is crucial in order to re-pattern your thinking and attract more of what you’d love into your life.
MYTH #1: The Dark Side Of Success Is Not Worth The Hassle
One might think that there couldn’t possibly be a “downside to success.” Can you think of any?
Several of the most common fears, questions and doubts about success are:
- What will people think of me?
- What if my friends don’t grow like I do?
- Will my parents accept my choices?
- Will my friends think I’m competing with them?
- Who will I spend time with if I lose all of my friends?
This fear is powerful. We all care about what others think of us from time to time — this is just a part of being human.
But do we want to let fear of what others think dictate the tempo of our lives?
The Law of Attraction holds that like attracts like.
If you have a positive, optimistic outlook, for example, you’ll naturally attract more uplifting people and experiences into your life, even if your life circumstances change drastically as a result of your success.
Always do your best to surround yourself with forward-thinking, like-minded people who support you fully in your dream-building endeavors.
These are the friends and family members who will be overjoyed for you, and who will celebrate you, when you achieve the success you desire!
Remember that being successful and living a life you love living are the best gifts that you can share with the world.
When you are happy, this energy ripples out into the world around you, and you inspire others to pursue what makes them happy too.
MYTH #2: I Am Not Ready for Success
Who ever feels 100% ready to take a leap into the unknown?
And how many people experience “perfect timing” when it’s time to stretch beyond their comfort zone and take a risk?
Feeling like you’re not ready or that the timing isn’t quite right for you yet is actually called the perfectionist paradigm — you’re waiting for the stars to all be in alignment before you embark on your success journey… but the fact is that this rarely happens!
You could wait for the perfect time, for the perfect person to show up and help you, and for the perfect circumstances to appear, but all you’ll do is end up waiting… and postponing… and not taking action on your goals and dreams…
I teach my clients that they can move toward their dreams simply by doing what they can, from where they are, with what they have.
Let me explain why procrastination is such an insidious problem:
It keeps us stuck in the same place, doing the same things over and over again.
We remain stuck in the same rut.
Eventually, we get used to the rut we’re in.
It becomes comfortable to us, and once this happens, the rut we’re in simply becomes our “new normal.”
We settle for where we are, instead of aspiring to lift ourselves higher.
So many people choose to live unhappy lives without realizing that the problem is not their circumstance, but rather the fear they have around pulling themselves up and out of the rut they’re stuck in.
MYTH #3: I’m Just Waiting For The Other Shoe to Drop
Have you ever thought to yourself, “This is too good to be true! Something bad is bound to happen.”
Sometimes, when we get a taste of success, the sensation is unfamiliar. We’re not sure it’s real.
It’s delicious, mouth-watering, but it can’t possibly last, can it?
Fear makes its presence known in the form of worry, doubt and even scarcity.
However, keep in mind that, once we begin moving toward our goals and dreams on a regular basis (no matter how big or small the step), success is inevitable.
Remember: FEAR = False Evidence Appearing as Real
Don’t let this false evidence keep you from your dreams.
MYTH #4: People Who Succeed Are Lucky
I believe that there is no such thing as luck when it comes to success.
Believing that luck brings people success means that we are at the mercy of circumstances, situations and conditions beyond our control, for better or worse.
The belief that we are governed by elements external to us is the same belief that makes us victims instead of the architects of our own lives.
In reality, there is a power within each of us that is far greater than any circumstance, situation or condition we will ever find ourselves in, and when we recognize this, we shift our energy into a higher vibrational frequency and start naturally attracting more opportunities for success into our lives.
Also, success requires action, and the actions we take are always within our control.
So achieving success has nothing to do with luck, but rather with recognizing that you are more powerful than your circumstances, that you can always choose to take action (or a different action) in service of your dreams!
MYTH #5: Success Requires Sacrificing What Matters Most
We often hear sayings like “no pain, no gain,” or “everything comes at a cost,” but neither of these things is entirely true.
While transforming your dreams into reality can take time and energy, it doesn’t mean selling your soul or losing what what brings you joy in the process.
Think about it… if you gain lots of financial abundance but have to work 80 hours a week and never see your family, is this really success?
You have successfully earned money, but this doesn’t necessarily mean you’re successful in terms of what you’d like your overall life to look like.
There are only so many hours in a day.
Each dream you choose to travel down a path toward means leaving another path untraveled for the time being
Whatever your dream may be, here’s how to know if it’s worth your time and energy:
There are 5 questions you can ask yourself to test your dream and determine if it’s worthy of pursuing. Begin by asking yourself the following:
- Does it give me life?
- Does it align with my core values?
- Does it require me to grow?
- Does it require the help of a higher power?
- Does it have good in it for others?
If you can answer “yes” to those 5 questions regarding your dream, it is a strong indicator that as you move in the direction of a dream that you would most love to have manifest in your life, you can know that you know that it’s worthy of your time and attention, and that you will assuredly not have to sacrifice what matters most to you.
Success doesn’t guarantee a problem-free life
A word of caution is in order.
It’s also a common to believe that once you achieve a certain level of success, that suddenly life will be super easy and stress free – and this just isn’t always the case!
We all pick up false beliefs while we’re growing up. But not everybody learns to see through these beliefs and create the life they desire. That’s why some people stay stuck in jobs, relationships, and lifestyles that they don’t enjoy, while other people forge ahead and create things that might have seemed impossible considering their circumstances.
Life will always be full of ups and downs, and no matter how much money or measures of success you attain, you’ll still experience challenging periods in your life.
But the challenges you face will help you grow in strength and resilience, which will propel you forward in your pursuit of your dreams!
