Can a “Calm and Modest Life” Really Be the Answer?

In 1922, Albert Einstein travelled to Japan for six weeks, where he stayed at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo.

As he was preparing his speech to accept the Nobel Prize in physics, a bellman came to deliver a message for him. Einstein was short on change, so rather than giving the bellman a tip, he gave him a note, and told the bellman that his note would someday probably be more valuable to him than any change he could give.

About 100 years later, that exact note sold at auction for over $1.5 million.

Here’s what Einstein wrote in his note to that bellman:

“A calm and modest life brings more happiness than the pursuit of success combined with constant restlessness.”

Now let’s take a closer look at Einstein’s theory of happiness and uncover what it can mean for your life.

What did Einstein mean when he wrote, “A calm and modest life…?”

Einstein had just won the Nobel Prize, one of the highest levels of success in science in the world. And he noted that a calm and modest life brings more happiness than the pursuit of success combined with constant restlessness.

So let’s talk for a moment about what Einstein meant by “a calm and modest life.”

Einstein knew that the key to success in life is to do what you love. He loved physics and he loved knowing that thoughts have power.

When he used the word “calm,” I believe he meant that happiness is found by calmly pouring love into what you do. That we can choose happiness in every situation.

And by using the word “modest,” he was pointing out that no single person has the ability to achieve great things on their own. Rather, there’s a greater power working with us and in us, and giving us life.

Call this power spirit, life or perhaps even God. Call it whatever you wish. Something sacred is happening within you at all times. And when you’re modest and humble, you know that you don’t have the ability to live just one day of life without this power.

But know this: You CAN be happy while you’re creating success. You CAN be happy while you go about your day-to-day. And you CAN create more and more success along your journey.

What Einstein meant by “constant restlessness”

Have you ever felt unfulfilled when life was good? Have you ever been busy and successful but sensed emptiness inside?

In over 40 years of studying and mentoring others in transformational principles, many people have told me they feel restless. They have a feeling that there’s “something more” to life.

Einstein taught us that feeling these emotions may mean you’ve made choices that have left you disconnected with yourself and your true passions – what you truly love. You’ve possibly made some life choices based on what feels “safe” instead of what fulfills you and lights you up.

The good news is that you can always find your answers and fulfillment inside by asking yourself, “What would I love?” Although your exploration might lead you to a new path, it’s self-examination that leads to peace of mind.
