Taking a Deeper Look at How We Celebrate the Most Romantic Day of the Year

In the United States, Valentine’s Day is a special day dedicated to celebrating love. But for many people, it’s a day usually spent either looking for love or analyzing how love is expressed to them.

There are plenty of people who, at the end of the day, find themselves feeling disappointed because they didn’t get the card they expected, the flowers they wanted or the dinner out they were hoping for.

For others, Valentine’s Day is a painful time because everywhere they look, they see couples holding hands, going out to dinner or staring into each other’s eyes.

However, there’s another way to spend Valentine’s Day. And whether or not you have someone special to celebrate with, this is a practice that you can use to have a wonderful, happy Valentine’s Day, no matter what.

1. Know the difference between desire and expectation.

According to OxfordDictionaries.com, desire is a very strong feeling of wanting or wishing for something to happen. Expectation, on the other hand, is a belief that something WILL happen.

In other words, desires are the wants or thoughts projected by you towards the world, whereas expectations are the results you’re expecting back from the world.

It’s perfectly normal to desire love in your life. It’s also perfectly normal to want to deepen a relationship.

But how many times have you been disappointed when things didn’t go the way you expected?

You see, when you hold onto control and the belief that things need to turn out a certain way in order for you to be happy, you give your power away. Your happiness then depends on your circumstances or conditions.

So this first step is to notice exactly what you desire when it comes to love and what you expect.

2. Shift your attention from GET to GIVE.

Valentine’s Day is a beautiful opportunity to turn up the volume on your own expressions of love toward other people, situations and causes that you care about. And just like everything else in your life, you have the ability to choose and create your best Valentine’s Day ever.

So how you do that? You shift your attention from GETTING to GIVING.

If you truly want your Valentine’s Day to be spectacular, the secret is to shift your expectation of receiving love to a desire to give more love.

Every time you notice yourself thinking about what you’re NOT getting, tell yourself,

“My Valentine’s Day this year is all about giving.”

Something almost magical happens when you shift your attention from get to give.

3. Replace your negative, contractive feelings with more positive, expansive ones.

When you find yourself thinking about what you might be missing, feeling disappointed that your partner didn’t do or give something more, not sharing this special day with the love of your life or not experiencing the love you desire, pause for a moment and take a deep breath.

Notice that contractive thought or feeling and remember that the Infinite will give you as much breath as you’re willing to take in. The truth is, you live in a sea of love. You didn’t create yourself – you can’t even make your heart beat one time. There’s something beautiful and sacred happening within you and it’s this thing called life.

Life speaks to us in the language of love.

Today, make the love in your life move through you, drawing from that source. You may want to make some phone calls to people you care about or send some cards of appreciation to people who have made a difference in your life.

Think about what you can do throughout the day to be a person who brings love – because the vibration you bring is the vibration you live in on a daily basis.

When you make the switch from getting to giving love, you will most likely experience your happiest, most loving Valentine’s Day ever.

From my heart to yours, Happy Valentine’s Day!
